Guidance Policy
At Little Roots, guidance means teaching, not punishing. We help children understand their feelings, learn safe limits, and make things right, while keeping their dignity and sense of belonging intact.
Connect first
We get to eye level, ask the child to name what they’re feeling, then set the limit. “What are you feeling right now? Hitting hurts our friends. What could you do instead?”
A peace corner, not time-outs
A cozy calm-down spot with breathing cards and a calm jar. A child may go there by choice or with a teacher. It is never a punishment.
Breathe & ground
We practice calming tools like balloon breaths and barefoot grounding so children can use them when feelings get big.
Natural consequences
Related, respectful, and brief: sand thrown means a short break from the sandbox, and spills mean we help clean.
Repair, not forced apologies
We help children notice how others feel and find a real way to make it right. “How can we help them feel better?”
Prevention through rhythm
A predictable rhythm, plenty of outdoor movement, real food, and rest help prevent many hard moments.
Partnering with parents
We share what we notice, listen to what works at home, and use consistent, gentle language together. Ongoing concerns are discussed privately with families.
Safety
If a child’s behavior puts themselves or others at risk, staff calmly move children to safety and follow [Behavior / safety escalation procedure].
We never use physical punishment, shaming, yelling, or withholding food, rest, or outdoor time.
I have read and understand the Little Roots Guidance Policy.
